Support of STEM Education and Careers
Supporting and encouraging young women to explore high paying, STEM related careers is directly in line with the AAUW mission to support economic security and empower women.
The AAUW-WSM branch has a two – pronged approach to STEM.
First, the organization works to identify opportunities to support community STEM events that are primarily targeted towards girls and young women. Our goal is to add value to these events by leveraging our career experiences and supporting AAUW mission and goals. Currently our branch collaborates with the MSOE STEM center and participates in various events.
In recent years our branch leveraged our collaboration with the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) STEM center by participating in the MSOE Girls STEM Careers Day event. The event included over 60 outstanding girls in grades 4-9, learning about STEM careers. We designed an inspirational booth display and gave out goody bags. We also sponsored scholarships to cover the cost for 15 girls to attend the event.
Next, we directly support our branch members by working to promote familiarity with STEM education and careers. Recently we enjoyed a comprehensive tour of the Milwaukee School of Engineering campus. Also, our program committee regularly provides STEM related programs at several of our monthly meetings throughout the year.
